Custom Mouthguards and Dental Surgery in Doncaster East

Creating Quality Mouthguards for Your Lifestyle

Mouth guards are highly recommended while playing contact sports e.g. footy, basketball, rugby, cricket, hockey or martial arts. It can prevent damage to teeth, surrounding soft tissue, jaws and even reduce risk of brain injury. Mouth guards are especially important if the upper incisors are protrusive (making them more prone to damage).

While wearing braces, custom mouth guards can be made to fit over the braces. However, when there is lot of teeth movement, especially in the early phase, the custom mouth guard may not fit after a short time. A more economical way is to use a “stock mouth guard for braces" at the early phase. Once the teeth position are more stable, a customised mouth guard can be made.

An Occlusal Splint (often referred to as night guards) may benefit individuals who suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding) and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. They help reduce teeth wearing, alleviate symptoms of tenderness, stiffness and promote relaxation of jaw muscles.

How to Take Care of Your Mouthguard

Just like your teeth, mouthguards need to be properly taken care of to maintain their health and viability. There are things you can do to help your mouthguard last longer and work better, including the following:

  • Scrub it with a toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Keep it stored in the provided case
  • Avoid leaving it in overly hot temperatures
  • Replace it if it doesn’t seem to be fitting properly
